Blog Post #2 - Jump Cuts
I wished to find a way to convey the passage of time in my project, without spending all day recording the actual passage of time. I did some digging, and that's when i found the solution, Jump Cuts. A Jump Cut is a sudden cut in the middle of a clip, which creates a lack of consistency by leaving out part of the clip; Essentially taking non-connecting parts of a clip and editing them together to create a sense of leaping through time.
The usage of Jump Cuts to quickly pass time allows them to be used in many ways. One of these ways is a montage, which is a quick and repeating series of video clips, meant to pass time in a compressed manner, to convey an idea or message. Another usage of Jump Cuts is to convey a disorganized or panicked state of mind. By removing portions from a scene you can insinuate a loss of memory, or even leaving out of details.
The video below had multiple great examples, which helped me to understand the concept of a jump cut , what they can accomplish, and how to use them.
Jump Cuts can also be used to emphasize an object, by working as a zoom, clipping together shots of the camera being closer and closer to an object. This is called an Axial Cut. Below is an example I made, of a zoom-in vs an Axial Cut, on a tape measure.
