Score is the non-diegetic music that plays during a film. Score in a film affects the outcome of a scene greatly. A scene of a robbery with harsh, dark score will be interpreted as a harsh, dark, and evil act. While a scene of a robbery with glamorous, upbeat, and pleasing music might be interpreted as a more happy, angelic, and justified act. These different types of score can affect how a character is perceived, what their personality is, or even their intentions.
For example, in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, this scene starts off with warm and pleasant score in a coffee shop, showing his intense passion. This score influences the audience to be calm, and have a positive feeling on the characters in the scene. When the barista Stone receives a message on his smartwatch, the tone of the score switches from upbeat to dark, dramatic, and worrying tone. The sudden switch of the score's tone indicates an oncomi.ng dire danger, and changes the audience's perspective on the scene, and the character in the scene
This use of score helps to set the tone for the following scene, and the character of Stone in general. This helps to show that the tone, pitch, and speed of score can have an affect on the atmosphere of the scene.
Score in a film can also help to emphasize important events, create tension, or even guide the pace of a scene. Score can emphasize many different types of events, deaths, surprises, and great outcomes are among the most relevant. Important events can even be emphasized via a sudden stop, or reduce in volume of score, setting the stage for attention to be focused on the screen. A recent notable example of this is in Oppenheimer, where the gigantic explosion of an atomic bomb at a test site left the score muted, and the crowd shocked.
I feel I can use the effects of score to my advantage in my project, by using it to keep the opening part of the intro at a fast pace, to make sure it is not boring, and to make room for the rest of my ideas. I can also use score to create a sense of mystery, I'm not yet sure how, but it is my goal to figure out how; possibly with a slow beat and a piano.
In this post, I plan to give a general, current visual representation and sequencing for my project, and the scenes within it. These scenes include Fern and Ed speaking in the detective's office, Fern and Ed exiting the detectives office, Fern and Ed entering the car and driving in it, Fern and Ed appearing at the crime scene with the dead body, and possibly a scene featuring the killer. This picture is a representation of the first scene, featuring an over-the-shoulder shot behind Ed, facing Fern reading the "S.K.B.D. News" This picture is a representation of the second scene, showing Ed and Fern leaving the office, through a two-shot, with Fern in the background, and Ed in the midground, picking up keys in the foreground. I chose this configuration to put emphasis on the keys. These pictures are a representation of the fourth scene, which starts with an action cut from the last seen, showing Ed and Fern leaving the office driveway, through a wide shot. This th...
While me and my actors were getting ready to start recording, we ran into multiple unexpected problems. The scene I will be discussing in this post is the scene of the security camera footage, which features the Killer killing Lacey's Child, the Killer played by me, and the child by Ethan. The script for this scene has the killer approaching the child, and stabbing him, with (fake) blood flying out. Photo of me, Eriberto (Eddie) Mendoza, in the Killer's outfit before recording The problems we ran into may have been unexpected, but they were not unpredictable and could have been planned ahead. The biggest obstacle we ran into was the weather . We noticed a few hours before, the sky had gotten gloomy, grey, and cloudy, but I dismissed it, being eager to start production. When my actors arrived at my house to record the scene, I felt a drop come from the sky, at this point I was starting to get worried, the sky had gotten darker and more grey. Recording When we went to st...
Concept for the Film My idea for my final project is a fictional crime film, mainly set in a suburban neighborhood. The idea of the film is that there is a black-hooded killer, the antagonist being seen around this neighborhood, and whenever anyone sees this killer, they disappear. The protagonists will be the detectives, Ed and Fern, who are friends but argue with each other often, who have been sent out to figure out the origins of the killer. The names for these characters were influenced by names of people i know, one of which being myself. My Idea For the Opening The opening scene of the movie will be the two detectives in the office leaving their office. I’m unsure about the specifics at this point in time, but I have an idea of a close-up of the detectives' hands picking up car keys and their coats. This will transition into a scene of them driving down the road in a car, as a timelapse. This timelapse will be followed up by showing the detectives exiting the car to determi...
