Blog Post #24 - Costuming the Killer

Costuming is an important part of any film, show, or video. The way a person is dressed signals to people around them their personality, and their character. In particular, the costume will help the audience of a film to understand a character's role in the movie— a dark, gloomy outfit will signal a dark motivation, while a more relaxed costume will signal a more relaxed character. This post will focus on the costuming of the killer, the villain in my project, and the choices I made that led to that decision— and how I planned for them to look.

The initial idea of my killer was to have them wear a black, hooded cloak which hood was big enough to cover everything on their body, besides their hands. The killer was also supposed to have a blade sticking out of their arm, which I planned to be a bracelet-type device to attach onto their arm— which would not be seen in the film.

The black-hooded cloak of the killer made them seem dark, like a shadow, and covering their body helped to enshroud them in darkness, to make them seem mysterious. The hands being shown were decided to show that it was a human and to account for the fact that many common outfits online may not be long enough to cover the hands, depending on the actor used.

My new decisions of the costuming of the killer have important updates. One of these choices is to include a black glove covering the hands, with red stripes— or to use dark red gloves. Another one of these choices is to have a black-brown small cowl type piece, to give more color and detail to the outfit. The killer’s blade will also either have a red tint, or red color built into it to depict the iconography of blood, which is fear and danger to my culture. The killer will also be seen with a red and black box, that folds apart. This prop will be part of the killer’s “disappearing” persona

With this update to the costuming, i am a step closer to finishing my preproduction and starting production. I will need to further develop my other character's costumes, and find materials/outfits to reflect the idea for those costumes. I still plan to start next week, although later into it.
