Blog Post #30 - The Killer's Outfit

A character's outfit is a vital part of their character, and in this post, I will be finalizing the outfit of the Hooded Killer. My goal is to rationalize, restate, and summarize the decisions I have made creating this costume. Costumes are an essential part of any character's role in a film, as I've discussed previously— they signal character roles, intentions, and symbolism inside of a narrative. For instance, a character with an outwardly "bright" outfit, may be a lighthearted character who does not have much going on in the film, while a character with a more dark, intimidating outfit may signal a darker motivation, or role within a narrative.

My idea for the outfit of the Hooded Killer, the villain archetype within my project (According to Propp's Character Theory), is supposed to be a mysterious, dark figure who looms over people. They have a dark motivation, with unknown origins, and their costume reflects that. Here's how

My goal in creating the costume for the Killer is as stated above, dark, mysterious, and ominous. Obscuring the face, and most of the body of my killer helps to add the dark, mysterious tone, along with the costume being black helps to further emphasize the role of the killer within the narrative. The choice to show the hands when designing the killer helps to emphasize the killer's blade, which they use to take people down.

The black cloak represents darkness, and power within the film, as it assumes the role of obscuring the killers' legs, torso, and arms. I chose this cloak due to its fast delivery date, relatively low price, and good reviews— it fits well within what I was hoping for. If it does not meet any of these specifications, such as revealing the hands, it can be cut and reworked to meet it. The cutting of the cloak may also help to make it look more worn, symbolizing the dirty, dark nature of the killer.

The brown cowl on top of the cloak helps the killer to be seen a bit easier, and to provide greater coverage of the face. I chose this specific one due to its shape, price, delivery speed, color, and reviews. It'll help the killer to be easier to spot in low light, or black and white shots. It also helps the killer's design to not be so one-toned.

For the Killer's blade, I will be combining 3D-Printing with different prop techniques in order to reduce the cost of it, given it will not be seen much in my opening 2 minutes. I will speak on this soon. Also, for my Killer’s glove I will be using normal gloves that I already own. In summary, these are the pieces I will be purchasing to come up with the costume for the killer, next I will focus on the Detective's outfits.
