How do your products use or challenge conventions, and how do they represent social groups or issues?

"My project uses the iconography of detectives in order to give Ed and Fern credibility as detectives.

I achieved this with the costuming of Ed and Fern, which includes the standard detective stereotype of dark outfits, more specifically, trench coats, suits, and fedoras.

As you can see, Ed is suited in a black suit, a tie, and a fedora, while Fern is suited in a black trench coat and the same fedora as Ed.

My project, Beneath The Hood, also challenges racism and reinforces multiculturalism. Racism is the discrimination and prejudice against a group because of their ethnicity, and multiculturalism is the mixing of multiple ethnic groups into one society. My project, Beneath The Hood, reinforces multiculturalism due to Fern and Ed’s friendship, which shows people from multiple cultural backgrounds coexisting. This is shown as they are working together, are clearly friends, and share a similar concept of humor.

This helps to dismantle the prejudice and hate of racism, which many people express against people who don’t look like them, which is a major social issue many people, specifically minority groups, have had to face the consequences of for centuries.

I also use the standard convention, light vs dark, where dark is supposed to convey a more sinister, malicious, you could say, black-hearted person, while lighter colors convey a more kind, pure-hearted person.

An example of this in modern media is Sonic and Shadow in the movie Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Shadow is the antagonist; he is covered in darkness, and Sonic is bright blue, and he is the protagonist, is portrayed as a pure individual.

I used this convention for the costuming of the killer. The killer is completely covered in black, head to toe in a big cloak, masking him in shadow entirely. While the detectives have visible areas sporting brighter colors that you can see, compared to the killer.
