Blog Post #4 - Score

Image
Score is the non-diegetic music that plays during a film. Score in a film affects the outcome of a scene greatly. A scene of a robbery with harsh, dark score will be interpreted as a harsh, dark, and evil act. While a scene of a robbery with glamorous, upbeat, and pleasing music might be interpreted as a more happy, angelic, and justified act. These different types of score can affect how a character is perceived, what their personality is, or even their intentions. For example, in Sonic The Hedgehog 2, this scene starts off with warm and pleasant score in a coffee shop, showing his intense passion. This score influences the audience to be calm, and have a positive feeling on the characters in the scene. When the barista Stone receives a message on his smartwatch, the tone of the score switches from upbeat to dark, dramatic, and worrying tone. The sudden switch of the score's tone indicates an oncomi.ng dire danger, and changes the audience's perspective on the scene, and the c...

Blog Post #3 - Detective Uniforms

Image
When I, and many other people picture a detective in their mind, they all picture the same thing, a person in a suit, with either a black or brown coat, with a black fedora and a magnifying glass. This stereotype of how detectives look has been established for many decades, stemming from many decades of different media; Literature, TV shows, Comics, and Film. But is this really accurate to real-life detectives? The Detective Archetype, from: wildgratitude.com The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) states that the appropriate articles of clothing for Detectives while on the job is "clothing most applicable to their job duties for the day", specifying a uniform, bureau attire, or casual clothing.  Though when conducting department business, business attire must be worn. For men, business attire is described as slacks, a dress shirt, a tie, and jacket, along with a suit jacket. For females, business attire is "a dress, dress suit, skirt and blouse, pantsuit,...

Blog Post #2 - Jump Cuts

Image
I wished to find a way to convey the passage of time in my project, without spending all day recording the actual passage of time. I did some digging, and that's when i found the solution, Jump Cuts. A Jump Cut is a sudden cut in the middle of a clip, which creates a lack of consistency by leaving out part of the clip; Essentially taking non-connecting parts of a clip and editing them together to create a sense of leaping through time.  The usage of Jump Cuts to quickly pass time allows them to be used in many ways. One of these ways is a montage, which is a quick and repeating series of video clips, meant to pass time in a compressed manner, to convey an idea or message. Another usage of Jump Cuts is to convey a disorganized or panicked state of mind. By removing portions from a scene you can insinuate a loss of memory, or even leaving out of details. The video below had multiple great examples, which helped me to understand the concept of a jump cut , what they can accomplish, an...

Blog Post #1 - Final Project Idea

Image
Concept for the Film My idea for my final project is a fictional crime film, mainly set in a suburban neighborhood. The idea of the film is that there is a black-hooded killer, the antagonist being seen around this neighborhood, and whenever anyone sees this killer, they disappear. The protagonists will be the detectives, Ed and Fern, who are friends but argue with each other often, who have been sent out to figure out the origins of the killer. The names for these characters were influenced by names of people i know, one of which being myself.  My Idea For the Opening The opening scene of the movie will be the two detectives in the office leaving their office. I’m unsure about the specifics at this point in time, but I have an idea of a close-up of the detectives' hands picking up car keys and their coats. This will transition into a scene of them driving down the road in a car, as a timelapse. This timelapse will be followed up by showing the detectives exiting the car to determi...
